Visit of two gems of Chianti like Castellina and Radda

The Sienese Chianti roughly coincides with the territory of the municipalities of Castellina, Radda and Gaiole, a “triptych” of names that refer back in time to that “Lega del Chianti”, about which you will discover many things by booking this tour.

This long day of wine, good food, culture and history will start with the pick-up at your hotel or apartment (whether you are in the center of Florence or in the Florentine hinterland).

The departure is scheduled for 9am. There will be 3 stops, so we will have to leave early.

The first stop will be in Castellina in Chianti. Only the spectacular road that leads from Florence to this heavenly corner, almost hidden among the rolling hills of Chianti, is reason enough to stop and visit the streets made of stones and the quaint old town. In any case, as if this were not enough, Castellina boasts a past rich in history and interesting events that date back to the Bronze Age, not to mention its active participation in the production of oil and wine.

In Castellina we will visit the historical center, but also the Archaeological Museum, located inside the imposing Rocca. In the Museum are exposed archaeological remains and important findings of the surroundings, reflecting the ancient origins of the Chianti region. The museum displays artifacts from the Bronze Age, from the Etruscan period, but also remains found in the ancient medieval structure of the city.

A short walk from the historic center, we will also visit the Tumulus of Montecalvario, an Etruscan tomb open to the public and dating back to the 6th century BC. The tomb was discovered in the 16th century, but since it was not properly excavated and protected, in the early 1900s it was looted and robbed of many of its valuable artifacts. The most interesting discovery is, perhaps, that of the remains of the Etruscan “cart”, rebuilt and exhibited at the Museum of Castellina.

After this immersion in a piece of ancient history that is not easily associated with the Chianti region, it will be for us the time to make a stop at the Castello di Meleto, an enchanted place where you can enjoy unforgettable moments between past and present.

The Castle of Meleto is above all an imposing historic residence, today a farm of great charm that produces delicious wine, oil, cured meat. The construction of this castle dates back to the year 1000 in its most ancient parts. The castle belonged to the Benedictine monks and later became the property of the Ricasoli family who enlarged it in the 1700s and transformed it into a splendid country residence. Between a tasting of good wine and one of the typical cuisine products, it will be nice to relax and let yourself be inebriated by the aromas of vines and olive trees, junipers and brooms.

In the castle’s basement, a real historical monument, we will be able to enjoy a delicious lunch and we will have the chance to take a tour of the winery, with a tasting of the Castle’s products. Not only wines, but also organic extra virgin olive oil and Cinta Senese cured meats coming from breeding in the wild. Here you can experience a unique and unforgettable experience in a true Chianti Castle.

The eyes (and the stomach) filled of everything amazing Meleto has to offer, we will jump on the car to move towards the last stage of the day: Radda in Chianti.

Radda is a spectacular medieval village enclosed by mighty defensive walls, located on the top of the hill that divides the valleys of Arbia and Pesa. From very ancient origins, it seems to have been inhabited since the 9th century and mentioned for the first time in an official document of 1002. The traditional Tuscan charm of the local stone facades adds to its typically medieval appearance, characterized by narrow streets and classic tower buildings of the period.

It is no wonder that in the past Radda was the capital of the Chianti region: its strategic position, in fact, served as a point of coordination between the nearby towns of Gaiole and Castellina. The breathtaking view, the typical atmosphere of a small Tuscan village, and the natural flavors of this land make Radda one of those essential destinations in an itinerary to discover the Chianti region.

After visiting the village of Radda in Chianti and its main church, it will be time to return to your accommodation.
